Yelena Yemchuk
The Labyrinth
6-Day Multi-Media Workshop
November 17-23rd, 2025
Taking notes from Henry Darger’s, In the Realms of the Unreal, multi-media artist Yelena Yemchuk presents a six-day workshop on narrative and world building. The workshop is intended to present small exercises using existing work brought by the participants with daily assignments that will crossover mediums from photography to writing and drawing to conjure new work on site.
It is an experimental workshop that functions more like a retreat than a workshop with a singular group effort also underpinning the experience. With this in mind, we will be working toward a long continuous image on a scroll/mural. All members of the group will participate in its design, story, and execution. Storyboarding and group narrative building will be part of the process.
We will take 1-2 daily excursions to Sintra, and other local attractions. Participants should be open to adventure and making images wherever the experience takes the group. The result is less about a product or singular artwork, but the output of energy from magical thinking culled from the daily exercises/experiences.
We will provide limited materials on site from various papers, printers, paint, and glue sticks to sketchbooks, and will suggest motifs and readings to draw from. If you come with an open mind, you will not be disappointed.
This is a process-based workshop and will focus on experience over results. Please keep that in mind before you apply. The outcome is second to the encounter. Please join us in sunny Portugal post-Parisphoto for an end of the year journey into the labyrinth of collective imagination.
