Brief:
This workshop explores themes of text and image through work-in-progress. Text and image are fundamental ways we communicate thoughts and ideas. Across messaging, graphic design, and art, their use offers a rich field of material for artists interested in extending their work beyond either category on its own. In this extended course, we will study the history of text and image while also sharing contemporary examples from literature, film, collage, and mass-media forms such as photobooks, newspaper publishing, underground zine culture, and magazines.
From a historical perspective, we aim to reintroduce earlier material as a way to push new forms of production and thinking within our increasingly dematerialized contemporary moment.
Artists Considered: A partial list of related artists, thinkers and publications that may come up in our sessions: Hervé Guibert, Teju Cole, Annie Ernaux, Nicholas Muellner, Jesse Jackson, John Baldessari, Duane Michals, Roland Barthes, Lewis Baltz, Anne Carson, Jim Goldberg, Taryn Simon, VU Magazine, THING, Martha Rossler, Germaine Krull, Takuma Nakahira, Barbara Ess, Sally Mann, Mahmoud Khattab, Mike Kelly, Raymond Pettibon, Peter Beard, Barbara Kruger, The Gorilla Girls, Stanley Wolukau-Wanambwa, Erica Baum, Andrew Riad, amongst other artists and movements such as Dada, Surrealism, Conceptual Art
How It works:
This six-month program is intensive and designed for participants looking to expand their thinking around text and image. We will meet monthly via Zoom on the dates outlined below. Each session will last approximately 4–6 hours.
During group sessions, we will discuss assigned readings, screenings, and research, followed by a full-group critique of each participant’s work-in-progress. Prompts will be given at the end of each session to guide responses for the following month. Participants who already have a project in development may continue working on it, provided it meaningfully engages both text and image.
In alternating months, participants will receive individual, private critiques. Each participant will have 30 minutes per session to present and discuss their work, both in the group setting and one-on-one.
The course will also include guest lectures from artists whose practices emphasize the relationship between text and image.
