Mårten Lange and Brad Feuerhelm
Material and Time – Past, Present and Future
Athens, Greece
March 25-29th, 2025
“In a society that celebrates the inessential, architecture can put up a resistance, counteract the waste of forms and meanings and speak its own language.”
Peter Zumthor
"Space, time, the presence of the past, the materialized dreams of the future, sometimes half finished. The contrast between old and new, harmony and disarray in the city. The vain, but very human struggle against oblivion. Architecture can be the desire to make something permanent, or to just solve a problem short term."

What constitutes architecture in 2025?
And, when we think of architecture, do we dismiss the everyday, the imperfect, or the inconvenient? Architecture takes many forms. Some forms are monumental, while others are silent passive witnesses to history and the decline of an era. Others exhibit a profundity of experience and immerse the person in a space that impresses and sometimes intimidates. Classical architecture has proven to outlive millennia of other forms. It is celebrated even when compromised by decay and destruction. It is a marker of time, history and culture.? Where do people fit inside these spaces, both historically and at present.

Celebrated artist and photobook-maker Mårten Lange will join Nearest Truth’s Brad Feuerhelm to explore the concept of architecture in photographic practice. The duo will explore a wide vision of architecture and suggest ways of interaction that tell a broader story of its place in contemporary society. Both artists have books that have delved into these topics and will bring their knowledge to Athens for this 5-day workshop.

Participants will be expected to make work during the workshop. We will look at work daily and join participants in shooting in the city of Athens. In our daily meetings, we will also examine work by other artists who have used architecture as a fundamental component of their work. The idea is to see the city and its individual structures as a catalyst to unlock how we maneuver cities of historical substance. Participants will be encouraged to develop new work and to use Athens as a canvas from which to inspire new bodies of work. As withal Nearest Truth workshops, the emphasis is on process and experimentation. This experimentation often unlocks new ways of making work that will enable participants in the future.
