Urban Baroque
June 21 - 25th 2025
5-Day Zine Workshop
Athens, Greece
When we consider the term Baroque, what comes to mind? A format of architecture? An 18th-century term that dictated style? An assertion about grand forms eliciting a condition of wealth or extravagance?
Athens is a city rich in both former and current glory. It is one of Europe's most visited and historically significant cities, continuing to inspire generations of artists. Athens embodies a mysterious quality, juxtaposing its previous status as an empire against the harsh realities of its post-crisis contemporary existence. Is there an inherent beauty in irregularly shaped pearls?

For the workshop, artists Brad Feuerhelm and Yoshi Kametani will lead a small group of participants through Athens, recommending locations to shoot and explore the interplay between two distinct layers of the city's timeless face. The first layer portrays the city as a historic playground, where ancient monuments and the empire's glory serve as a visual source of beauty. The second layer invites participants to examine the modern aspect of Athens, characterized by its weathered stone and densely populated neighborhoods. Participants will be encouraged to contemplate the written façade of the city and investigate its signs, graffiti, and the messages that emerge from the opulent and decayed layers of the city.

The outcome of this workshop will be a zine featuring a screen-printed cover created by Yoshi Kametani’s studio. This book/zine will be published in a limited edition by Nearest Truth Editions in the autumn of 2025. Each participant will have their work included. All participants are encouraged to experiment and seize the opportunity to reflect on the concept of place and the rich history of forms that embellish the contemporary city of Athens. It is a city like no other, and its influence can be intoxicating.
