A workshop with
Hannah Modigh

5-Day Workshop

Athens, Greece

October 7-11th 2026

Hannah Modigh is a world-renowned contemporary Swedish artist known for her extended portrayals of geography, with a heavy emphasis on the American landscape. Starting at an early age, Hannah’s widely celebrated Hillbilly Heroin, Honey (Journal, 2010) describes the changes manifest along the economic landscape of the world’s powerhouse and the result of labor policy in the Appalachian Mountains. Touching yet concerned with the difficulties of job loss and prescription OxyContin, the project examines life along the edges of small-town America, affected by America’s new reality as it was just coming into view.

Two decades later, she has returned to her first book, to photograph many of the same people. The new work follows lives across generations, revealing how relationships, landscapes, and bodies carry the marks of time. It reflects on continuity and change, exploring the enduring bonds between people and the consequences of aging, memory, and survival.

Photography becomes a space for recognition and reflection, where finely observed details reveal something of a person's inner life. Through long-term engagement and close relationships with her subjects, Hannah creates images that speak not only of individual lives but also of the passage of time and the histories that shape them.

The artist followed this with both work in Sweden and a project with several more Americentric bodies of work, from her work Hurricane Season and Sunday Mornin’ Comin’ Down, all of which place long stays in America as part of her effort to document and evolve a conversation about America, its marginal communities, and by proxy, her experiences within the territory. Many of these projects were born from long-standing engagements with geography and people.

For this workshop, we will investigate the role of the documentary in creating bodies of work. We will discuss the challenges of adapting and what it means to engage with a subject to gain access to making work in environments not our own.

Hannah is dedicated to portrait photography and will share her tips and techniques for creating images that convey atmosphere and emotion. She will talk about how she establishes trust and a genuine connection with the people she photographs, working through a shared sense of presence and empathy. Participants will gain insight into how subtle gestures, posture, and timing is important in taking a portrait and to get a narrative through.

Participants will be encouraged to research Athens and its various locations, and to form friendships with its people, to produce new work while on the ground. As this workshop will require days of shooting, we will likely meet in the late afternoon to give participants a chance to make work during the daytime. Topics will be largely self-initiated, and participants should come with a working sketch in mind. We will have access to a Greek Assistant who may be able to help with general inquiries.

This workshop is aimed at those who already have some experience, but who want to exchange ideas and test their limits by making work in one of the world’s most exciting cities.

We have one full scholarship position available for a Greek female photographer. Simply email us for further information.
