The Invention of Place
Athens, Greece, October 14-18th, 5-Day Workshop
Few artists can undermine the specificity of place like Swedish artist Martina Hoogland Ivanow. Her work feels alluringly vague, caught in a dream state; lucid echoes of cinema pervade. At the same time, the deliberate play of shadow and color reveals a queasy relationship to reality, much like memory and dreams themselves. There is a slippage in the work that takes the viewer out of time and place, and into the wide possibility of disseminating what they see, allowing it to conform to their worldview and to project their inner subjectivity atop an image.
For this workshop, we will use the city of Athens as a means of producing work. The city and workshop will be our laboratory, and we will explore the themes of ambiguity, dreams, and memory as they relate to the photographic image. Conversations about the displacement of documents and how images are shaped by our ability to project onto them will feature prominently.
Though this is a shooting workshop, participants are encouraged to consider moving image, sound, writing, and collage to aid in their quest to make images regarding place. We will meet daily to discuss reference works and explore the work created the day before.
Participants must be willing to push themselves and use the workshop as a laboratory. This workshop is for those who want to expand their experience in image-making and are open to working on initiatives with their own ideas and impetus in mind. We are looking for participants who can push their own boundaries and take leaps in their work while using the laboratory as a risk-free environment of encouragement and camaraderie.
We will offer one full scholarship to any Greek female artist living and working in Athens.
