Summary

Please join us on this special traveling workshop with eminent American photographer Mark Steinmetz in Italy this autumn.

A Moveable Feast will be open to all photographers who can do work while on the road. Deviations, mediations, and alternate mapping of routes to each city will be encouraged. Participants will be expected to find their way to each city, where we will convene to speak about what we have seen, experienced, and created. Along part of the route, participants will have the opportunity to follow Mark and Brad along differing journeys before meeting in each location. The experience will be a large part of the reward. We will ALL be making work, and you will get the opportunity to work with two dedicated photographic workshop instructors.

Whereas the remit for making work is open, we expect participants to work on the road and not focus on existing work. You may deviate and consider different forms of image-making, from collage to audio recording to moving images. Everything is permitted. These workshops are meant to entice artists to take risks with constructive and encouraging criticism applied.

A note about the title: We are borrowing the title from Hemingway, but the original etymology of the phrase a moveable feast is an observance in a Christian liturgical calendar that occurs on different dates in different years. In some respects, our rituals, movements, and processions will be considered mediations reverent to our practice.

How it Works and Where it Works

During this workshop, each participant will determine the journey. We will have group meetings on three days of the seven-day journey. These meetings will consist of reviewing each other’s work. We will give feedback and offer prompts to bring new work back at our next meeting. Mark or Brad may be there in some cities before the meeting and will be available to visit cultural sites, museums, bookstores, etc. Each instructor will be available should participants want to join them in part on the journey.

October 24 Milan

We will spend the day learning about your work and your motivations for the trip. We will commune for dinner and discuss potential groupings and movements that will follow over the following days.

Participants may begin their journey from that point or the following day (suggested). Some participants will be encouraged to travel with Mark, and others with Brad.

October 25-26 Shooting

This first part of the journey will involve as much shooting as possible between Milan and Florence. The idea is to gather a basis for the workshop. These two days will be the freest in terms of time. It is heavily suggested that people use these days to gather as many images as possible to edit through. You may travel in any manner you like via train, car, etc. Mark and Brad will be able to help participants if they wish to travel along their respective journeys.

October 27 -28 Florence and Shooting

We will meet in Florence at the Tuscan House of Photography, where we will stay for the night. Participants must arrive by noon. We will review the past two days of shooting and make suggestions as a team for how each participant will continue their work. After our meeting on the 27th, participants are encouraged to make their way toward Rome. We will stay overnight at the establishment, and the price is included in the workshop price.

October 29-30th Rome and Shooting

The final day will see the Participants meeting in Rome to discuss their work in Rome. The instructors will be there early to greet the participants, and various meeting points will be suggested throughout the day, including museums, bookshops, and cultural sites. We will discuss the experience from mid-day by reviewing work on the final day and celebrate with a dinner in Rome.

Filming

We will film part of the experience for a promotional video for Nearest Truth. Designer, videographer, and musician Lee Tesche (Algiers, Lyonnais, Nun Gun) will help create a visual memory of the journey. You don't need to participate, and we will ask ahead of time who does not want to be filmed. The documentation is for promotion but also as a memory of a unique journey across Italy with Mark Steinmetz and your fellow participants.

Digital suggestion, Analog solutions

It is highly suggested that participants work in a digital format. Participants may engage with analog but will be responsible for finding their own development methods and scanning to show their work digitally at each stop. We suggest making analog and digital images throughout the journey.

What the workshop includes

The price of the workshop includes the educational side. It does not include travel fare or food. All participants are responsible for themselves and their financial needs. Choices of travel and accommodation are up to the participant. Fortunately, Italy is well connected by train and not expensive to travel through during the off-season of October. All participants are responsible for their safety and will be asked to provide a point of contact to the workshop organizer. The price of admission covers a one-night stay with a meal at the Tuscan House of Photography.

What do you get?

These workshops are structured, but artists work best with some freedom to control their environment. Nearest Truth Workshops are experiential in nature. We believe that learning happens through engagement with the world and our peers. We do our best to encourage participants to step out of their comfort zone, to forget what came before, and to embrace change, opportunity, and serendipity during the workshop. We will provide ongoing feedback throughout the process, and both instructors will give insight into their process of making work. You will expand your network through the instructors and your peer group. The Nearest Truth family is growing at a fast rate. Many former participants remain in contact and connect often in and outside later workshops. Come along and expand your horizons.
